Scott Adams on Flag Burning

I’ve always thought the idea of an amendment to ban the burning of flags was a bit idiotic, since you’re actually supposed to burn flags in order to appropriately destroy them. But Scott Adams (the creator of Dilbert, don’t you know) stepped up to the plate recently to set forth why it really makes little sense. Perhaps our “dedicated public servants have finally solved the problems of crime, drugs, war, poverty, terrorism, healthcare, immigration, and the mystery of why our children are such idiots compared to Norwegians”. Yay!

In case you missed it, or just don’t feel like reading Scott’s thoughts, it really makes little sense to ban such a thing when American flags are little more than mass-produced memorabilia (probably made in another country, no less). If anything, such action will likely spawn a new industry that creates flags that look almost entirely, but not exactly, like the real American flags, with an extra star here or a missing stripe there, so you can burn them in all their (lack of) glory, without fear of retribution. Sounds like a plan. Anyone have some spare cash around to fund my new venture?

Oh, I know the country would function very well without their intervention!

No, they would still be senators and congresspeople. We could require them to be in session as least two weeks out of the year. The rest of the time they can be whereever they want.

I think you’d find the country would function very well without their intervention.

That’s an interesting perspective. Though by giving them money and sending them someplace, we’d probably just exacerbate the problem.

We’d end up giving them money (which they would spend) and vacate their seat (which someone else would take).

Actually I like congress debating flag burning. I figure as long as they’re debating something like this, they’re not debating raising my taxes. The more we can keep them occupied, the less chance they’ll reach into my pocketbook.

I have long advocated increasing their salaries and then sending them on junkets around the world. Make them a leisure class. As long as they’re on vacation, they’re not raising my taxes. Yes it would cost us a LITTLE more money, but it pales two what it costs when they raise taxes.
