Sometimes You Feel Like a Tool

I recently mentioned that I had been working with BaseCamp. I also mentioned that I liked it. The product – even the free product – has a lot to like. But then, like so many other times, I hit the wall. I wanted to do this or that, and it just didn’t do that. Or this. So I started searching again.

I must have tried a dozen different project management apps that I could find. All were okay, none really wowed me. The last one in the list that I tried was PMTool. I’ll be the first to admit, it isn’t pretty. But the functionality that I needed was there. It just needed some tweaking to get where I wanted it to be.

And with an actual software product, not only could I keep control over my own data, if it didn’t do what I wanted, I could make it do what I wanted. Thus far I have altered at least nine of the core files to change the way something displayed or sorted or something. A couple times I’ve added a little extra functionality to a page so I could do what I wanted.

Now? It’s just about where I want it. And if it’s not, I can tweak t some more. The only problem is that the project doesn’t seem to be active. This isn’t a huge deal, as I don’t look forward to integrating my changes with a new update. But I just find it interesting. I tried contacting the most recent maintainer (as listed on the site) and have yet to receive a response. Anyone have any idea what’s going on with the project?
