Dirty Jobs Recap: Micro-Algae Man
Pet Groomer. This episode starts with a pet groomer, which gets into all sorts of dirty, mostly due to the expression of the anal glands. Please tell me you don't need a map. Just think of the poo.
Micro-Algae Man. After this, uh, messy experience, Mike goes to Hawaii where he ticks off some algae in order to harvest it for medicinal purposes. The algae - micro-algae, actually - starts off as a happy green. But it doesn't do anything while it's green. You have to make it mad by adding it to salt water and harsh sunlight.
Once the algae is mad (a few days later), it turns red and puts out a particular chemical that can be harvested for use as a super antioxidant. But it's got to get good and mean (and red) first. That's the messy part. It also tastes good. And if you eat enough of it, you get red poo.
Charcoal Factory Worker. This is perhaps the dirtiest segment of the series, and probably my favorite to date. The dirt really starts flying when Mike visits Struemph Charcoal. With thousands of clumps of wood scraps scattered throughout their woods, the Struemphs first char their wood, a dirty process in itself. Then they take it down to the holler, where it gets sorted, bagged and packed for delivery.
But the fun doesn't stop there, as the dust gets collected to make regular charcoal briquettes - and that's one of the dirtiest jobs ever, as Mike can attest - he nearly gets stuck in the mess. At one point he has to stick a pipe up, well, a larger pipe to break it up and it just comes pouring out. Priceless.
