Bloglines Toolkit 1.5.0

I’ve just released an update to the Bloglines Toolkit. Mostly because a new nightly build of Firefox broke my installation to some degree, so I figured it was time to let it loose.

This version makes some small changes in various text strings and also updates the notifier icon so that it looks like the current Bloglines icon instead of the old one. It also makes use of the Mozilla (Firefox?) automatic updating routine. An RDF file on my site will be updated when I release a new version, meaning that I don’t have to create a blog entry – though I surely will do so.

To you, it means that if you want to check without reading my blog, simply go into the Firefox Extension Manager, select the toolkit, and then click Update. If there is anything to find, you’ll see it presented and have the option to install it. One word of warning: The update process seems to cache the information, so if you want to check, it’s probably best to clear your cache and/or restart your browser. Otherwise it might not work as expected.

Finally, I’ve had some reports of icon display problems under Firefox on OS X (it’s obscured to some degree). I’ve also had some reports that it looks fine. It does not seem to be version-related, but I’m not certain, not having a Mac on which to test. If you’d like to help out with that endeavor, please feel free to do so. Many thanks to those of you who have already contributed.

Update: Even though you have the buttons, you will not be able to “clip” items at this point (Mark says he is working on it). It’s for blogging only at the moment. I’ll update you when I hear something more. In the meantime, don’t use it for clippings – only for blogs!

Any chance of an update to this great extension?

My most common usage is right-clicking an Atom/RSS link & selecting Bloglines Toolkit > Subscribe to this link.

This hasn’t worked for aaaages, tho, and I am sad.

    Please update it!

I’ve been using v 1.5 of the Bloglines toolkit very happily for some time now. Yesterday, it stopped working. I haven’t a firm recollection of the course of events, but I believe it was after I had made some changes to the configuration of my Firefox v 1.0.7. I’d done four things: set “network.http.pipelining” to true; set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to true; set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to 30; and set “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” to 0. When the Bloglines notifier stopped working, I found that there was a later version of the toolkit, 1.6, and so I uninstalled my existing extension and installed the current version. That’s made no difference. Fooling with the configuration made me conscious of the possibility that there might be some settings for the toolkit. I found ten of them by using about:config, but I won’t bother repeating them unless you think it might be useful.

Can you suggest anything I might do to try to get my notifier functioning again?

    Thank you,

    Leslie

    Hello Adam –

You mention that you have uninstalled and disabled and the like. Can you tell me specifically what you did? That is, what order?

I would recommend disabling the toolkit. Restart. Uninstall. Restart. Reinstall. Restart. You should have to re-enable, after which you can restart one more time and that should take care of anything within the toolkit itself.

If there are still problems, you may want to consider that it could be another extension – have you installed anything recently? One that I know to have problems is the “Forecast Fox” extension.

If you are using that, you should disable Forecast Fox, then restart. Re-enable Forecast Fox, and then restart again. That has been shown to be effective in this particular case. If it’s something else, give me some details and I’ll see what I can do.

    Thanks!

Hello jayseae, I am a big fan of your extension for Bloglines. I use it everyday. I noticed that yesterday the B hasn’t been updating with my new unread items. I also noticed that when I click on it nothing happens. Or I get a page open in a new tab that is just untitled. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, and I have disabled and re-enabled the extension and no luck getting it to work. Any ideas what it could be or what may be conflicing with it? Thank you for your help. Adam

It sounds from your wording (“the article”) as if you’re expecting the toolkit to do something that it doesn’t do. Specifically, the toolkit doesn’t affect the links at the Bloglines site at all. The only affect the link settings in the toolkit have is when you use the links in the toolkit. Namely after clicking the notifier, choosing the search, looking for references, subscribing to a page and adding to your Bloglines clip blog.

If you use Windows, and have a three-button mouse (or a two-button mouse with a clickable scroll wheel), try using that button instead of the standard left-click. Or simply set the preference (Firefox 1.0RC and up, I believe) in Firefox to always open “new window” links in new tabs instead.

Sorry that I couldn’t be more help.

I’m still having problems with the “Open in New Tab” features that have been driving me crazy since the first major upgrade of the software. No matter what option I check, the article always opens in a new window, instead of a new tab.

I know I am not the only person to comment on this, but I’ve never seen anything resembling a suggestion to fix it. I still use the extension because of the ease in subscribing to new feeds, but to suddenly have five windows open is more than aggravating.

Was I just dense and missed the solution?
