Bitch Slap for President

So Teresa Heinz Kerry (is that hyphenated?) has apologized publicly for her comment about Laura Bush.

Yippee.

What I want to know is why does this matter?

If true, is it really important that Ms. Bush hasn’t held a real job? What effect does that have on her husband’s ability to serve as president?

If untrue, the same questions need answering. And does Ms. Kerry’s neglect to mention that Ms. Bush was a mom affect anything, or make her husband more or less likely to do a good job?

NO.

I can’t tell you who you should vote for in a couple weeks. But I can say that this sort of thing is completely pointless. Does anyone else think that perhaps our news coverage has gone a bit too far when this is made into an event that seemingly has overtones to the race itself?

Meanwhile, local elections are apparently already effectively over for many candidates.

Though I have to wonder – even though in this case (at least) districts are drawn to favor the incumbent, and no particular victor emerges, what about the at-large races? It seems, at least in Mecklenburg County, that these races can decide the fate of the commission, making the fact that the districts are drawn oddly a bit less of an issue. Perhaps what we really need are some at-large representatives in the federal government. That might stir things up a bit.
